Ford's first Cosworth badged icon was a world beater in terms of both visual impact and performance, and it happened largely by accident during a tour of Cosworth's plant for Ford officials. Although a small amount of pre production vehicles were made in 1985 mainstream production began during 1986 with a run of 5000 vehicles to comply with Group A homologation regulations.
